Growing Dahlias

Plant after your last frost date, once soil temperatures reach at least 60°F — typically late April through May in most growing zones. Dahlias are frost-sensitive: a hard frost will kill sprouts. Read our full Planting Guide for detailed advice.

Yes — pinching is the single most impactful thing you can do for more stems and blooms. When your plant has 3–4 sets of leaves at about 12 inches tall, remove the central growing tip. This creates a bushier plant with significantly more cutting stems. See our Pinching Guide for the full technique.

After the first killing frost blackens the foliage, wait 1–2 weeks and then dig the clumps. Store tubers in a cool (40–50°F), dark, frost-free location packed in dry peat moss or vermiculite. Check monthly for rot. Our full Digging & Storing Guide walks you through every step.

Cut Flowers & Vase Care

Properly harvested and conditioned dahlias last 6–10 days in the vase. The key factors are: harvesting at the right stage of openness, conditioning in cool water for several hours before arranging, changing vase water every 1–2 days, and keeping arrangements away from direct sunlight and heat.

Dahlias have hollow stems that can air-lock. Try recutting the stem at an angle underwater, then placing it in fresh cool water in a cool room for a few hours. Often they will revive. If the stem feels mushy, unfortunately the bloom is past its best.

Weddings & Events

Yes! We offer farm-grown wedding and event florals using what's in season on our farm. Our arrangements have a romantic, natural aesthetic with an emphasis on texture and fragrance. Please reach out with your date and vision — we take a limited number of weddings per season.

We recommend reaching out at least 6 months before your date, and earlier for peak season dates (June–October). Popular weekends book quickly. The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility we have in planning around your vision and our bloom schedule.
